The first session of Home Link started in September 2000 with 38 students. Today, we have over 500 students. We also provide core and enrichment classes at our Deer Park and Clayton campuses.

6-12 **This class requires that students have taken a previous clay/pottery class and placement in this class needs approval by the instructor before registering. This class is intended for the student who really enjoys working in clay and desires to advance their abilities with the medium. They will learn more advanced techniques in hand-building and master throwing pots on the wheel. Students will have certain expectations regarding their work and are expected to take more time, striving for detailed, refined and unique art forms. Together with the instructor, they will plot a course of objectives for the semester. A student in the class needs to havethe maturity to work more independently and strive for quality work, with a desire to further explore and stretch their growth with clay. They will assist with loading the kiln and learn more about different types of clays and kilns. If time allows this class may explore some different types of firing methods.

Class Description:
This is an academic track class for which students will earn a full English credit. Weekly homework includes reading, writing, projects, presentations and research. This course focuses on British literature from the legends and medieval periods up to the end of the 19th century (perhaps more if we can fit it in!). Students will discover the exciting world of literature and how it shaped England's history, customs, and traditions, as well as our own American history and literature. Through class discussion, lectures, group and individual projects, films and classic documentaries, students will gai n a rich understanding of the beauty of literature and writing, as well as a deeper grasp on their own reaction to this amazing body of work. All genres will be covered, including epic poetry, sonnets, elegies, lyric poetry, dramas and plays, and the short story.

Class Description:
Clay Art for Kids K-1 Young students will be introduced to and explore the three-dimensional world of making art using clay. Through fun exploration and getting hands dirty, young students will shape clay into a variety of forms and shapes. To cap it all off, they will also get to paint their pottery pieces in bright colors. Students will make and bring home an average of 12-20 pieces over the course of a semester. 2-3 Clay work and the exploration of there dimensional art forms will make a great introduction to the arts and or Will complement any other artwork you student is working on. Most kids love the feel and touch of clay, and will learn patience as they explore various techniques to make both decorative and functional pottery. Their efforts and experience in clay will be highlighted by painting their original and unique, one of a kind, pottery pieces in bright, colorful glazes. 4-5 With this age group, your child probably has already begun drawing, coloring and perhaps crafting or painting. Clay art is often times a child's first exposure to the three dimensional world of art, requiring a different thought process to making art. This class will have fun getting their hands dirty and making basic shapes and forms, advancing into more intricate pottery pieces as the semester progresses. Pottery pieces will range from small to large, both decorative and functional. Expect 15-20 completed pieces in a semester, perfect for gifts and a lifetime of memories.

In the spring, candidates will learn a combination and audition before a panel of judges. They will also respond to a questionaire that examines commitment level. Class Description:
Year long, high school only, with preference given to 12 graders: Preference is always given to seniors, but underclassmen are permitted to join us for the career pathways material of it if there is room and if they speak with me individually about the seriousness of their intentions in this for-credit class. A must for every senior whose goal it is to achieve a high school diploma. This class is given as part of the Senior Project requirement. Students will receive one-on-one as well as group guidance in the creation and completion of an individual senior project. This includes interactive, dynamic "workshops" on job-search and career-related essentials like interviewing, knowing yourself/skills identification, applications and resumes, job market/job search, and the extremely popular life skills/soft skills module. Examples of components of the senior projects include 4-H involvement, community service, volunteering, scouting, mentoring, tutoring, sports camps and leadership activities. Graduating seniors will present their projects in the spring. Seniors also have the option of meeting independently with an advisor if this class does not fit into their schedule. Junior strength training class This is an introduction into strength training for the younger students. Entry-level concepts and practical applications of strength will be taught each session. The resistance loads will be low to allow the correct exercise movement patterns to be developed. A brief portion of each class will be devoted to nutrition and to healthy eating choices. Candy bars are ok, sometimes. The younger students will be taught proper technique in the basic multi-joint exercises. In some instances, i.e. a child that is biologically older than their peers will be exposed to greater external resistance. Higher repetitions and sets predominate in these classes. We will use two and a half, up to five-pound color-coded dumbbells. The color-coding allows me to readily know the weight each child has in its hands. A current sports physical is required before participating in this class. Notes: Your child must have the maturity to listen carefully and follow clear instructions. For those of you who are reluctant to enroll your young child in strength training class please read the following: According to the position statement of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), a properly designed and supervised strength training program can increase the child's strength and help to enhance the fine motor fitness skills and sports performance of children, regardless of age. Additional benefits include the prevention of injuries in sports and playground activities, plus improvements in the overall health and the psychosocial well being of the child. Specially made bars, weighing from one to two pounds are used in class. As the child's strength adapts to the programmed load we will add additional small free weights to the bars. They will not be doing one-repetition maximum lifts. These are closely supervised classes.
