Deer Park Thursday 5th Period Grades 2 to 3
Class Description:
Junior strength training class This is an introduction into strength training for the younger students. Entry-level concepts and practical applications of strength will be taught each session. The resistance loads will be low to allow the correct exercise movement patterns to be developed. A brief portion of each class will be devoted to nutrition and to healthy eating choices. Candy bars are ok, sometimes. The younger students will be taught proper technique in the basic multi-joint exercises. In some instances, i.e. a child that is biologically older than their peers will be exposed to greater external resistance. Higher repetitions and sets predominate in these classes. We will use two and a half, up to five-pound color-coded dumbbells. The color-coding allows me to readily know the weight each child has in its hands. A current sports physical is required before participating in this class. Notes: Your child must have the maturity to listen carefully and follow clear instructions. For those of you who are reluctant to enroll your young child in strength training class please read the following: According to the position statement of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), a properly designed and supervised strength training program can increase the child's strength and help to enhance the fine motor fitness skills and sports performance of children, regardless of age. Additional benefits include the prevention of injuries in sports and playground activities, plus improvements in the overall health and the psychosocial well being of the child. Specially made bars, weighing from one to two pounds are used in class. As the child's strength adapts to the programmed load we will add additional small free weights to the bars. They will not be doing one-repetition maximum lifts. These are closely supervised classes.
